The group gathers in Delhi as evening falls and boards a comfortable traveller/bus for the overnight drive to Waichin, a serene and remote village nestled in the heart of Parvati Valley. You sleep as you travel, waking up in the mountains — a classic Himalayan overnight journey. The drive passes through Chandigarh, Mandi, Kullu, Bhuntar, Kasol, and then up to Waichin via the Malana Dam road.
Tip: Eat light before departure. Carry a neck pillow and a light jacket for the bus. Pack snacks — there are no stops for meals included on this drive.

Arrive in Waichin — described as one of the most beautiful and peaceful villages in all of Parvati Valley. The day begins gently: watch fog drift across the ridges, observe weather patterns, and let the Himalayas sink in. The acclimatisation activity involves reaching Malana Dam (a short drive/walk), then hiking for approximately one hour alongside a crystal-clear tributary of the Parvati River — one of the cleanest streams in the region. The day also includes a deep dive into Malana village culture: learn how villagers adapt to extreme high-altitude climate, and hear the mysterious, legendary tales of Malana's ancient republic.
Water source: Parvati River tributary flowing through Waichin. The stream is described as one of the cleanest in the valley.
Campsite/Stay: Twin-sharing homestay in Waichin village. First proper bed of the trip — rest well.

The first real trekking day. The trail begins with a gentle walk through lush green meadows alongside the calming flow of the river. As the path deepens into forest, trekkers will cross rivers — three times in total. The forest is dense and quiet; the sound of the flowing river, forest silence, and distant waterfalls become constant companions. Mota Grahan itself is a barely-touched valley — a wide, open, untouched space that catches first-time trekkers completely off guard with its beauty.
Water sources: River running alongside the trail for much of this section. Three river crossing points. Refill at crossings.
Campsite: Mota Grahan valley — twin-sharing glamping tent with insulation mattress, sleeping bag, lantern and camping pillow provided.

After breakfast at camp, the group sets off for Bhagdi — a sacred meadow that is home to Malana shepherds throughout summer. The terrain becomes progressively more lush and vibrant as you gain altitude. This section is renowned for an extraordinary variety of wildflowers, many found nowhere else on earth — and some that have not yet been formally named by botanists. As you approach Bhagdi, the path steepens with a steady ascent. Crystal-clear streams flow everywhere here, so perfectly transparent they seem unreal. The land feels energetically alive underfoot. Bhagdi is a peak of pastoral beauty.
Water sources: Multiple crystal-clear streams throughout this section. Described in the PDF as "flowing like something out of a movie." Abundant water — best to carry bottles but refill points are plentiful.
Campsite: Bhagdi meadow — open sky glamping camp in the sacred Malana shepherd grounds at 3,800m.

Gullas (descent from summit)
The summit day. An early start — the 2-hour climb to Devroopa from Bhagdi. The trail is so enchanting that the trek leader walks barefoot, feeling the soft cool grass underfoot. Rather than tiring, each step feels energising. The entire trail to Devroopa is lined with vibrant, antioxidant-rich wildflowers. At the summit, the peaks of Gherwakoti — "the emperor's palace" — dominate the skyline. The vast Devroopa meadow, the most sacred spot of the entire trek, opens up at 4,200m in all its overwhelming, wordless beauty. After spending time at the summit, the group descends to Gullas for the overnight camp.
Water sources: High-altitude meadow streams and glacial meltwater channels at Devroopa. The landscape is filled with small rivulets fed by snowmelt.
Campsite: Gullas — overnight glamping camp after descending from Devroopa summit. This is the highest and most remote camp on the trek.
Altitude gain visual (3800m → 4230m)
Summit tip: Start early (before 7am) for the clearest skies and best views. High-altitude wind picks up after noon. The barefoot walk is optional but deeply recommended for the sensory experience.

The final trekking day. The descent follows the river all the way down to Malana Dam, a 7 km mindful walk. The leave-no-trace philosophy is observed — every trekker carries out what they brought in. On reaching the dam gates, the group drives through Kasol (a brief exploration of the famous Parvati Valley town), before beginning the overnight drive back to Delhi. Arrive in Delhi the next morning with new friendships, transformed perspectives, and memories of the Land of Gods.
Water: River runs alongside the descent trail all the way to Malana Dam — ample refill opportunities. Carry extra for the drive.
Night: Overnight drive back to Delhi. Kasol stopover for food and exploration before departure.

Know Before You Go
Difficulty & Terrain
Overall grading: Easy to Moderate. No technical climbing. No ropes or crampons required. But altitude demands respect.

Terrain

Lush green meadows, dense Himalayan forest, 3 river crossings on Day 3, steadily steepening trails on Days 4–5. No loose scree or technical rock sections. Day 5 approach to Devroopa is a soft grass walk — genuinely suitable for barefoot walking in good conditions.

Altitude

Highest point is 4,230m. Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Day 2 acclimatisation at 2,800m is mandatory and built in. Watch for headaches, nausea, and breathlessness on Days 4–5. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen.

Weather

Parvati Valley weather is unpredictable. Summer days can be warm (15–22°C at base, 5–12°C at altitude). Nights drop to near 0°C at high camps. Monsoon (July–Sept) brings rain and slippery trails. Storms can arrive suddenly in the afternoon.

Fitness level

Suitable for first-time trekkers with basic fitness. Daily hikes range from 5–7 km over 5–6 hours. The key challenges are altitude gain on Day 4 (+600m) and the sustained 4,200m altitude on Day 5. Regular walking/jogging 3× per week for 6 weeks beforehand is sufficient preparation.

Safety

Trek guide, cook and porters are included. First aid box provided at camp. Pajuna's bio-toilet tents are set up at each campsite. Leave-no-trace policy strictly followed on descent. In case of medical emergency, evacuation route is via Malana Dam to Kasol hospital.

River crossings

Day 3 involves 3 river crossings through the Parvati tributary. These are walk-through crossings (not rope bridges). Water level varies by season. In peak monsoon, crossings can be knee-deep. Waterproof trekking shoes are essential.

Overall verdict: If you can walk 8–10 km a day over moderate hills and are comfortable sleeping in tents at cold temperatures, you can do this trek. The rating "Easy to Moderate" on summit day reflects the soft terrain, not the altitude.
Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Do the Devroopa Trek
The trek is in Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Season timing is critical here — the valley sits at mid-Himalayan elevation with distinct seasonal moods.

✦ Peak Season: June–July

The PDF's summer photography shows green meadows carpeted in pink and yellow wildflowers. This is when Devroopa is at its most spectacular — blooms everywhere, clear skies, long daylight hours, streams flowing at full strength. Bhagdi's unnamed flowers are at peak bloom. Temperatures at altitude: 8–15°C daytime, 0–5°C nights.

✦ Good Season: May & Early Sept

May offers snow patches at higher elevations for dramatic views. Early September sees fewer crowds with meadows still lush. Cooler temperatures and possibly some late-monsoon showers but generally manageable. The Gherwakoti peak views are clearest in September.

~ Possible: October (Winter edge)

The PDF's winter section shows the entire landscape transformed under deep snow — particularly the Gherwakoti peak face. October is the transition into winter. Trail becomes progressively harder; river crossings more treacherous. Experienced trekkers only in October. Stunning white landscapes but require full winter gear.

✗ Avoid: Aug (heavy monsoon) & Nov–Apr

August brings peak monsoon to Parvati Valley — river levels dangerous, leeches present, trails slippery, visibility poor. November through April the trail is under heavy snowpack and inaccessible without specialised equipment. Pajuna operates the trek primarily in summer season.

Sweet spot recommendation: June 15 – July 15 for maximum wildflower bloom and clearest summit views. Book at least 4–6 weeks in advance for these dates.

Natural World
Flora & Fauna of the Devroopa Trek
The trail passes through three distinct vegetation zones, each richer than the last. The PDF repeatedly highlights the extraordinary biodiversity of this valley.
Flora zones

Waichin Valley (2,500–2,800m)

Dense ferns (visible in PDF images), broad-leafed forest trees, rhododendrons in bloom (red flowering tree in PDF summer gallery), wild iris (purple iris photographed in PDF Day 1 section), abundant forest undergrowth. Lush and green in monsoon.

Mota Grahan to Bhagdi (3,200–3,800m)

Sub-alpine meadows begin. Transition from forest to open grassland. Wild blue forget-me-nots (photographed in PDF), unnamed Himalayan wildflowers that exist nowhere else. Medicinal herbs common in Malana shepherd territory.

Bhagdi to Devroopa (3,800–4,230m)

The crown jewel. The PDF specifically calls out "vibrant, antioxidant-rich flowers" lining the entire trail. Pink wildflowers carpet the meadow in the iconic Devroopa photograph. Some species are so rare they haven't been formally named yet — a true botanical frontier.

Signature Species Mentioned

Purple iris, blue forget-me-nots, pink alpine wildflowers (carpet bloom at Devroopa), rhododendrons, wild blue Himalayan poppies (likely), medicinal antioxidant flowering plants, dense fern beds in valley.

Fauna

Livestock & Domestic

Malana shepherds graze sheep and goats at Bhagdi throughout summer. Sheep herds are visible in the valley (PDF Day 1 photo). Mountain dogs are common at shepherd camps — the PDF shows a brown mountain dog resting in yellow wildflowers at Devroopa meadow.

Birds

Parvati Valley is known for Himalayan Monal (state bird of HP), Koklass Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant, various raptors including Himalayan Griffon vultures soaring above meadows. The forest section (Day 3) is richest for bird sightings.

Mammals (Regional)

Parvati Valley is known habitat for Himalayan Brown Bear, Snow Leopard (rare, high altitude), Bharal (Blue Sheep) at elevations above 4,000m, Marmots, and various small mammals. Himalayan Tahr possible on rocky slopes near Devroopa.

Cultural Ecology

The Malana community's relationship with this land is centuries-old. Bhagdi is described as "sacred" — shepherds live here all summer. The untouched nature of the valley is partly a result of Malana's traditional conservation ethic and restricted access culture.

Carry binoculars (listed in pack list as optional). The bird-watching and wildflower photography opportunities on this trek are exceptional — especially Days 4 and 5.
